Work As A Journalist Is A very Exciting Experience

From 1989 to 1999, I had worked as a Journalist in China over ten years. It was a very exciting experience.
When I was a child, I had two dreams: one was be a famous Journalist, another one was be a movie director.
One of my dreams came true--after I got my master dgree in journalism, I became a Journalist of XinHua News Agency--the biggest news angency in China.
Because I wasnt particularly interested in politics, my work mainly concentrated in the economic field. I also reported many social news . During my whole journalism career, I interviewed thousands people came from the various walks of life. Even today, I still remember a man who was the founder of a suicide prevention hotline - Yunqing Chen. He was a newspaper editor. He and his colleagues took shift to answer the hotline phone call. In 5 years, they answered over 2000 phone calls from all over the China. They helped many desperate people to change their mind from commit suicide (In China, over 100,000 people commit suicide every year). A few years later, I learned a shock news- Yunqing Chen Killed himself. It seemed very ironic, but I thought is was because he saw and heard too many unhappy stories, and he could not bear anymore. Anyway, he was a really good man, he had a big heart.
Many people know the saying--A journalist is a Uncrowned king. This saying is only popular in western countries. In China, we hevent ever had a real freedom of speech so far. The government has a strick censor system. This is a pain in the neck.
Journalist is also a high risk job. I had about 40 classmates when I was studying in a journalism college. So far, 5 of my classmates already died: one was killed in 1989 June fourth event; one was killed by airplane crash; one was killed by car accident, one was drown, one died from liver cancer.
Even though I had so many sad or even bad memories, I havent had any regrets about I once been a journalist. During my journalism career, I had seen a lot of interesting people and things, and I had leanred a lot of life lessons.

  4. What an interesting life story! Some parts must have been very fascinating like meeting many different people. Some parts must have been stressful knowing that the government was watching everything you said. Some parts must have been exciting. You were one of the first people to know some news. The story of Yunqing Chen is very tragic. He was there for so many people, but in the end when he needed someone to help him or someone to talk to, there was no one who could support or encourage him. I hope we don't miss the opportunity to help, listen to , and encourage people we know. Besides the dangers of traveling or being in an unsafe environment, I know that some Hong Kong journalists "disappear." A journalist must walk a very fine line in China. If he steps in the wrong direction, it could be a big mistake.

You are very talented in language and expression. Have you considered doing any writing or translating work?
